The Insider: BREWERS LAND HOFFMAN

January 7, 2009 by admin

The Los Angeles Dodgers have moved ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers and are now considered the favorites to land all times saves leader Trevor Hoffman, according to Scoutingthesports.com’s inside sources. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti and Manager Joe Torre have also reportedly spoken to reliever Jonathon Broxton who is, “comfortable” and “on-board” with the idea of Hoffman joining the Dodgers as closer, with Broxton moving back to the set up role he inhabited last year while Takashi Saito was healthy. While the Brewers made an offer they deemed as “strong” Hoffman is more comfortable staying close to his home in Anaheim, California, where him and his family resides. The Brewers were told early Wednesday that the Dodgers’ were Hoffman’s first choice. Hoffman was reportedly offered a one year contract with the Dodgers on Tuesday, and scoutingthesports.com has learned that offer to be worth between $7 and $8 million dollars including incentives. Some of the incentives in the Dodgers’ offer include bonuses’ for reaching 35 saves, 40 saves, no time spent on the disabled list, and an all-star appearance. Hoffman could sign with the Dodgers as quickly as Friday, according to sources. The Brewers plan to look at Takashi Saito and Juan Cruz as other options, with Cruz unlikely because it would cause the Brewers their 1st round pick.
