NBA Officiating: Get Over It

I attended a pre-season game last night between the Portland Traiblazers and the Denver Nuggets, and the topic of conversation all night was the replacement referees. Not because I wanted it to be, but because the fans would not stop whining about them.
Last night at the Rose Garden, there were 67 fouls called, which included two technicals and one flagrant foul. The fans in the arena complained every time a foul was called, and then kept pointing to the ridiculous number of fouls in the game as evidence that these replacement refs were awful. At one point the guy in front of me turned around and asked the women complaining if they knew what the average number of fouls in a game was with the ‘normal’ referees, and she didn’t have a clue. How can we complain without knowing what the norm is?
In 2008-2009, the average number of fouls called per game was 42. In last year’s preseason that number was 49. This year, the number has jumped all the way to 57.5. So the complaining woman was right, but who cares?
Last season everyone complained about how terrible the officiating was, and how there were as many no-calls as there were “ticky-tack” fouls. No matter what happens, people need to get over it, because if these refs are going to call it closer than last year’s officials, then the players need to adjust accordingly.
That brought me to another sad observation about the game last night, in which the players complain about every single call. According to the players, I don’t think there was a single correct foul called all game. At various points in the night, Carmelo Anthony kicked the ball across the floor, Nicholas Batum charged at a ref, and Juwan Howard waved a ref away as if to say, “you have got to be kidding me!”
My friend made a great point after the game when he mentioned that every single one of the players on the floor had been a star for the past five-plus years of their life. They dominated high school, college, and some have even dominated the professional level, and therefore they are used to getting all of the calls. These new officials are clearly making a point that Brandon Roy will not be getting any more special treatment than Aaron Afflalo, regardless of how many times Roy gets in the face of the official.
No sport more than basketball (except maybe soccer), do players act like such children on the court when they are called for a foul. Sure a foul in basketball is more detrimental than one in football (where a player cannot foul out), but players need to deal with fouls called against them instead of whining all the time.
Give the league a few weeks, and their point will be made and the foul numbers will drop back down. Until then, I hope the players and fans can stop using these new guys as an excuse for their poor play, and learn to live with it. Just like the last time some new refs came in.
